Delimitation of low topsoil moisture content areas in a vineyard using remote sensing imagery (Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2) in a Mediterranean-climate region

Irrigation can be responsible for salt accumulation in the root zone of grapevines when late autumn and winter precipitation is not enough to leach salts from soil upper horizons, turning unsuitable grape production. The aim this work present a novel methodology outline areas, within drip-irrigated vineyard, with low moisture content (SMC) during, after, an 11-month agricultural drought. Soil (SM) field measurements were performed two plots at followed by geostatistical method (indicator kriging) estimate SM class probabilities according threshold value, enlarging training set classification algorithms. logistic regression (LR) Random Forest (RF) methods used features Sentinel-1 Sentinel-2 images terrain parameters classify SMC vineyard. Both classified highest above 14% that located close stream lower altitudes. RF very well classifying topsoil zones during autumn-winter period. This delineation allows prevention occurrence areas affected salinisation, indicating which will need irrigation management strategies control salinity, especially under climate change, expected increase droughts.
